In Chapter 36, we’re introduced to Reformation and Counter Reformation.  This really hit home with us at our co-op, since we’re a Catholic-based group, and we LOVE our Protestants.  They could have used a group like ours back then to show them how to get along.

In Chapter 35, we’re introduced to the Renaissance era.  I threw in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle reference, because it was quite fitting.  This chapter also talks about the Gutenberg Printing Press.

History: Quetzalcoatl Scupltures


We had a special project for Chapter 32: The American Kingdoms.  I went out to Art in History and ordered 16 of the Aztec Quetzalcoatl sculptures.  The kids had a GREAT time painting these, and if you’re a homeschooler, or even if you have a classroom environment, like we do, I HIGHLY recommend this company!  Each sculpture comes with everything you need:  the sculpture, Styrofoam plates (for palettes), a NICE brush, a sponge, paint, and a great box to store it in.  Yes, even the packaging is nice!

I’d like to give a special shout-out to Brian Card.  He’s the regional manager, and he held my hand through the entire process.  I was even sent a free sample to try out before buying the 16 sculptures!  He’s the bomb-diggety.

The entire process took three class periods.  It’s important to emphasize that while the sculptures need two coats of paint, the paint dries fairly quickly.  However, you’ll still want to allow for enough time when painting them.

Whatever you do, don’t play any games.

This was a particularly gory chapter.  It happens to be one of my favorite time periods, and I had fun sharing what I know (which is more than what the book’s chapter gives).  The kids were completely fascinated by just how bloody of a time period this was.  They seem to really like the chapters where there is a lot of… drama.

The kids enjoyed chapter 28 so much, that I decided to keep making slide shows for the different chapters we have left in the book.  It really helps them to remember everything when they have these slides to look at.  This particular chapter, about West Africa, specifically Ghana, Mali, and the Songhay empires, were a little on the confusing side because there was a lot going on in that area.

We’re winding up our two-year adventure through Story of the World, Volume 2:  The Middle Ages.  I absolutely love this series (except vol. 4), and if you homeschool, it’s a wonderful curriculum!

You know how Papa gets a brand new bag?  Well, Mama got a brand new digital projector for Christmas, and guess who reaps the benefits of this fun technology.  My classes!

For history, I normally give an overview of the chapter first, and then we do an activity, coloring sheets, a map, and then a test.  When I give the overview, it’s usually a lecture, or I’ll put some notes up on the overhead projector.  This is fine and all, BUT… now we can have extreme visuals!  Yeah!

For Chapter 28, I made a slide show.  I put a slide up on our screen and talked about it.  Visual + auditory = learning!  I’ll most likely be taking this approach to the rest of the chapters in the book.

If you’d like to use it, you’re more than welcome to (I am by NO means a techie guru!, so it is what it is!).  Please note that the book does not cover the Spanish Inquisition, but I included it in the slide show.
